Het album The Joshua Tree, uitgebracht op 9 maart 1987, met daarop de hitsingles “With Or Without You”, “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” en “Where The Streets Have No Name” is het eerste album waarmee U2 een nummer 1 positie in de Verenigde Staten behaalt en komt ook wereldwijd bovenin de albumlijsten, waaronder in Nederland,  de UK en Ierland. Met meer dan 25 miljoen verkochte exemplaren wereldwijd groeien Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr volgens het muziekmagazine Rolling Stone uit van helden tot supersterren. 
Time Magazine plaatst U2 op de cover van de april editie in 1987 en roept de band uit tot “Rock’s Hottest Ticket”. Een beslissend jaar volgt, waarin ze van concerten in concertzalen naar de stadions gaan om aan de grote vraag naar tickets te kunnen voldoen en zijn ze op weg een van de grootste live acts ter wereld te worden die ze vandaag de dag nog steeds zijn. In de twaalf maanden die volgden creëerde het viertal iconische momenten zoals de met een Grammy Award bekroonde clip met daarin het bekende optreden op het dak van een drankwinkel in Los Angeles wat een verkeersontstopping veroorzaakte, het winnen van een BRIT Award en twee Grammy Awards voor o.a. album van het jaar, de eerste die ze ontvingen van 22. Hiermee zijn ze de meest bekroonde rockband in de geschiedenis van de Grammy Awards.
