Na het succes met “Sound Of The Westcoast” (18.000 stuks verkocht en bekroond met een Gouden
Tulp) is “Sound Of The South” het tweede soundbook van de hand van Leo Blokhuis.
Met muziek van o.a: Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley, Percy Sledge, Etta James & Otis Redding.
Soul is bij uitstek zwarte muziek, country is blank. Toch vervagen in het zuiden van de USA de
grenzen tussen beide genres. Zwarte artiesten spelen melodieuze countryliedjes en blanke
countryartiesten zijn geïnspireerd door de soulvolle klanken van hun zwarte collega’s. Al in
de vroege jaren 60 begeleiden multiraciale bands de artiesten van het stax label in Memphis
en begeleiden ex- countrymuzikanten de grote soul sterren in de fame-studio in muscle
shoals, Alabama. De fusie tussen beide stijlen wordt vaak countrysoul genoemd en in zijn
tweede soundbook inventariseert Leo Blokhuis zowel de beste blank beïnvloede soul, als de
soulvolle country. Daarbij komen niet alleen de muzikale kenmerken aan bod maar ook de
maatschappelijke invloed van de muziek in het Amerikaanse Zuiden
